Michael Jacques in His Own Words
Meet Michael, whose story of perseverance, positivity, and advocacy is touching lives and changing mindsets.
Michael will tell you that he has an intellectual disability and autism and that he can’t read and can’t write. But Michael has still accomplished many things, from writing books to becoming a sought after public speaker. He has delivered hundreds of presentations that inspire others to see the potential in every person and show that authentic inclusion means everyone belongs, regardless of their abilities or disabilities.

From an early age, Michael faced difficulties with speech and reading, often feeling frustrated as he watched others learn more easily. However, he never gave up. With the support of his family, friends, and community, Michael learned to creatively overcome his challenges in school and found his own unique way to graduate.
One of Michael's most cherished friendships began when he was three years old. This bond was built on mutual respect and love and a passion for video games and having fun, like most friendships we make when we are young. Michael’s life journey wouldn’t be the same without the unconditional support of his family and friends, who have played a central role in helping him become the person he is today. His parents and sister have been his strongest supporters, encouraging him to explore his unique talents and find his voice.
Michael began working at Sobeys after a co-op placement there in high school. He’s worked there for many years, where he has built strong relationships and has become a valued part of the team. His job provides him with a sense of belonging, and contribution, as he interacts with customers and co-workers.
Michael’s message is clear:
"Everyone has value and worth, no matter who you are."
Michael’s story doesn’t stop at his personal achievements. He has taken his message of perseverance and inclusion to a broader audience, delivering over 500 presentations to schools and organizations. His talks focus on the power of authentic inclusion, belonging, and overcoming challenges in life. He describes one of his early public speaking experiences as nerve-wracking, but with determination, he grew more comfortable. Today, Michael is a confident and engaging speaker using visual cues and sharing his message about authentic inclusion in his own words.
Although Michael can’t read or write, he wanted to write a book to tell his story. Using speech-to-text technology and support from his sister and her friends, he wrote his first book, Can’t Read, Can’t Write: Here’s My Book, an achievement that he holds as one of his proudest moments.
Michael’s message is clear: "Everyone has value and worth, no matter who you are." Michael teaches us that when you can imagine the possibilities, with support from family and friends, you can follow your dreams.
